24 Malian soldiers were killed in an ambush near the border with Mauritania

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) - An armed group has killed 24 Malian soldiers in an ambush on an army patrol in the Segou area near the Mali border with Mauritania, the military said on Monday.

Mali Armed Forces said eight soldiers survived in Bukka, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Mauritanian border. Four vehicles were destroyed, the army said.

Mali's security has deteriorated over the years.

The militants associated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State are present and regularly attack. Since 2015, militants have been moving from the arid north to the country's most populous center, where hostility and deadly violence have occurred among ethnic groups in the region.
