The New York Times reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping and those who were openly critical of the Communist Party were allowed to return home after being detained by Beijing police.

Ju Jangren, a law professor at Tsinghua University, was released on Sunday, citing two people who were acquainted with him, the newspaper said. He was taken from his home by police on July 6 - believed to have been linked to a book published in New York last month by a friend in which political articles criticized the Communist Party regime under G. Vaz.

Beijing police have not confirmed Ju's release to the New York Times on Sunday morning and have not even confirmed his detention.
