Pakistani police on Sunday said they had arrested one of the two suspects in the rape of a woman who was dragged from her car and attacked in front of her children when her car broke down’. Later, his car broke down on the Central Highway in Central Punjab.

Police said the woman locked the door of her car when she ran out of fuel. He called the highway police for help. As she waited, police said two assailants smashed her car window, dragged her out and raped her in front of her frightened children. The accused are also accused’ of stealing cash and jewelry from the woman before fleeing.

Atif Nazeer, chief of the Punjab Police's Criminal Investigation Wing, said one of the men was arrested’ following security phone records and had gathered forensic evidence from the incident near the eastern city of Lahore.

Nazeer said the suspect denies any involvement in the rape on the day of adultery. Some local media are reporting that the accused turned himself in to the police to plead his innocence.

The attack drew widespread condemnation on social media, with protesters demanding the public execution.

Recently appointed Lahore Police Chief Omar Sheikh was criticized’ for accusing the victim of traveling alone with her two children after midnight without checking whether there was enough fuel in her car. Yes or no Feminist activists have called on the government to dismiss Sheikh's remarks.

Gang-rape is rare in Pakistan, although reports of sexual harassment and violence against women are common. In Pakistan, nearly a thousand women are killed every year in so-called "honor killings" for violating the conservative principles of love and marriage.
